My mom loves romance royalty movies,I realized some of her favs involve first cousins marriages: The young Victoria (2009- Victoria+Albert), Sissi the young empress( 1956 Elizabeth of Austria+ Franz Joseph),¿Dónde vas Alfonso XII? (1958- Alfonso XII of Spain+ Mª de las Mercedes), Isabel (TV show 2013 Isabel+Fernando).I pictured myself telling her that most americans would think she enjoys watching incest movies. My poor mom would look at me utterly shocked, lol.

You’re Mom would be right to be shocked!

Wow, that’s quite a collection! Thank you for sharing those titles with us! So many! Awesome.

*petition for everyone to stop being so silly about cousins*

in case you don’t already know, there’s two canon incest couples (cousins) in the book love medicine by louise erdrich

No, I didn’t know! Love Medicine sounds very promising – double trouble!

“Love Medicine” is a multigenerational novel about two interrelated families living on a North Dakota reservation from the 1930s to the 1980s. It’s written as a series of 18 interlocked stories that often tell about the same situation from a second character’s point of view.

Sounds great. Thank you so much for the info!

Hello! Have you seen Mary Shelley´s Frankenstein (1994)? Gorgeous, underrated film, with Helena Bonham Carter as lovely Gothic heroine Elizabeth – those costumes! Anyway, Frankenstein and his adopted sister Elizabeth fall in love – they marry and have on-screen wedding night. They are not biologically related but Elizabeth says that she is Frankenstein´s “sister, lover and wife.”

Hi, Anon!

No, I haven’t seen Frankenstein – I didn’t even know it existed!

I suppose only someone who has read the book could tell us how old Elizabeth was when the Frankensteins adopted her, or does the movie mention it?

“sister, lover and wife”

Yes. Good.

Some brief wikiapedia-ing tells me that she was his cousin in the first version:

While Victor’s first cousin in the original release of the novel, in Shelley’s 1831 rewrite, she is first introduced as Victor Frankenstein’s unrelated, adopted sister.

Fabulous. I see you, Mary Shelley. I know what you’re into. Your pseudo-incest kink is as big as Emily Bronte’s and Jane Austen’s.

It’s funny, on Penny Dreadful, Frankenstein fell in love with a woman he was passing off as his cousin to hide her true identity.

Thank you for the recommendation, Anon!

Oh man I sent an ask once long ago but I forgot to mention! Fire Emblem Awakening has a lot of characters including LOTS of family dynamics. You can make just about anyone be parents or uncles or aunts or siblings or step-whatevers in the game. Sadly they usually can’t marry with the game mechanics, but there are canon cousins (they’re cousins no matter what you do) that can marry! Owain and Lucina. I don’t even need to go into the other possibilities with this game… I’d be glad to rec fics.

I think Fire Emblem must be the most incestuous video game franchise out there. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard more about it than any other.

I did already get one message about Awakening and Owain and Lucina, but it’s always great to learn more.

It’s great that you can have lots of family stuff going on!!!

No one’s gonna say anything about Supergirl being one of her greatest love rivals, huh.

well that was probably supergirl #1 not kara still weird tho

The first Supergirl was still Kara Zor-El, his cousin. But like, there were multiple instances of “man if we weren’t first cousins, I’d marry you” from Superman in the Silver Age hence…wild times at the DC offices.

Hey! If you live in the US (EST) you should put on mtv right now! They’re going to show an episode of “True Life” about women who’ve found love with their cousins and have had their babies. Thought I’d let you know since you might be interested. Real life shipping is not really my thing but I’m gonna watch it anyway because I find it interesting :)

Anon:

omg did you watch the new True Life episode? It’s called “I had my cousin’s baby”

I’ve never actually even heard of True Life (which I guess reveals how little MTV I watch), but that’s awesome.

Thanks for letting me know, sounds very interesting!

hey! I was wondering if you’d seen the movie “contes immoraux” (immoral tales)? it’s a collection of short films that deal with taboos, and I thought the first (loss of innocence between cousins) and the last (an interpretation of the borgias) would be interesting to you. They’re fairly explicit, particularly the last one, but have really intriguing dynamics – just thought you’d want to check it out! :)

Hey!

I have seen Immoral Tales! Intriguing for sure. It’s funny, I don’t remember the one about the cousins very much, but I sure do remember the Borgias one. I really appreciate the recommendation, Anon. Thank you so much!
